Surf Forecast and Surf Report for Essaouira
Why the surf report matters more than the postcard
Essaouira is not an always-on postcard peak. Atlantic swell, Mogador Island and the trade wind shape a bay that shifts hour by hour. A solid surf report — swell, period, direction, wind, tide — saves you from burning a session on chopped faces or a skinny bank.
Surf Club Essaouira reads that report every morning before the Tagharte beach briefing. We do not sell a magic wave — we pick the slot and, when needed, the 4x4 to Sidi Kaouki or Cap Sim.
This guide shows how to read Essaouira surf forecasts, which signals to cross-check, and how to turn an average report into a useful session — lessons from 30 € / 2 h, gear included.
The five report numbers to check
1) Swell height and period. Short small swell (1–1.5 m / 8–10 s) often means teachable whitewater in the bay. Longer period (12–16 s) loads Tagharte banks better and opens Sidi Kaouki.
2) Direction: W–NW swells feed the bay. 3) Wind: N/NE trades often build after lunch — mornings stay glassier. 4) Tide: mid tide is often the beginner sweet spot. 5) Temperature for wetsuit choice.

Tagharte, Sidi Kaouki, Cap Sim: reading each spot
Tagharte beach: sand bottom, Mogador shelter, ideal for beginners and group lessons. A “small” report here is not a fail — it is often the best classroom.
Sidi Kaouki (~25 min south): punchier peaks. We go when the bay is too small or chopped and your pop-up holds. Cap Sim / La Pointe: right point for stable riders — not day one.
Surf Club Essaouira picks the peak after the report, not from a fixed brochure. That is the difference between a surf trip and a taxi dump.
Trade wind, chop and morning windows
The trade wind is Essaouira’s signature. It can make kite excellent and surf chopped the same afternoon. Local rule: lessons and camps in the morning (often 8:30–12:00) while faces stay cleaner.
If your only slot is afternoon, we hunt a sheltered pocket or switch to kite/wing with the wind — why a multi-discipline school helps.
An Essaouira surf report only helps if you read it with the local clock, not only a generic European app.
Surf Club Essaouira report routine
We cross swell charts (period/direction), local wind, harbour tide and real observation from the promenade. A model alone sometimes lies; the sand does not.
For a weekend or camp, ask for the brief the night before. Surf Club Essaouira confirms a Tagharte stay or a south run.
This routine is the same for a single lesson, a 2-day pack or a surf camp: the report sets the plan, not brochure ego.
Turn an average report into progression
Small swell = more pop-ups and trim in whitewater. Big wind = safety focus, current briefing, maybe kite. Extreme tide = different banks, not an automatic cancel.
That is how an Essaouira surf report becomes a coaching tool, not a café excuse.
Surf Club Essaouira coaches leave two or three notes after each session so tomorrow’s report serves your progression, not only the photo.
Forecast FAQ: common questions
Cancel at 0.8 m? No for a bay beginner — often perfect. When to Kaouki? When Tagharte is too flat or chopped and your level follows.
Does “excellent” guarantee the session? No: local wind and tide still decide. Does an all-inclusive camp include the spot transfer? Ask it in writing on the quote.
